What Is the Difference Between Lead and Lead-free Oxygen Sensors?
For the application scopes of industrial monitoring, confined space safety, etc., the selection of LEAD AND LEAD-FREE OXYGEN SENSORS directly impacts the equipment’s span life and data accuracy. Today, we’ll provide a detailed explanation of the differences between these two products, as well as how to select them correctly to meet your needs.
I. Lead Oxygen Sensors
Sangbay Sensor currently offers two types of two-electrode oxygen sensors with a service life of 2 years under normal environmental conditions. Neither requires an external bias voltage, making circuit development simple.
Model: S4OXV
Advantages: High sensitivity, fast response time, 0V bias voltage, excellent repeatability and long-term stability, and mature mass production processes.
Applications: Ventilation monitoring in industrial facilities, commercial security systems, standard enclosed spaces, medical oxygen concentrators, and basic monitoring in grain silos.

Model: H4O₂
Advantages: Wide temperature range of -30 to 50℃; outstanding resistance to airflow, temperature, and humidity interference; fast response and zero-reset speeds; excellent repeatability and long-term stability.
Applications: Mines; pump-suction equipment in the petrochemical industry; outdoor online monitoring; medical oxygen concentrators; and detection instruments subject to significant high and low temperature fluctuations.
II. Lead-Free Oxygen Sensors
We currently offers three types of three-electrode oxygen sensors. The electrodes are non-consumable and lead-free, making them suitable for equipment for exporting. Under normal operating conditions, their service life can reach 5 years. All models require a -600 mV bias voltage for operation, requiring to developing circuitry in advance.
Model: S4LFO₂
Advantages: Standard Series 4 package; pins are compatible with the S4OXV; high detection accuracy; long service life; excellent repeatability and operational stability.
Applications: Mine alarms, fresh air systems, and oxygen generation monitoring instruments.
Model: SMLFO₂
Advantages: Miniature size saves internal space in equipment; operating temperature range of -30 to 50°C.
Applications: Various handheld detectors, small portable detection terminals.
Model: SALFO₂
Advantages: Compact size with half height of Series 4 sensors, strong universal compatibility and stable performance; primary choice for new stationary monitoring equipment.
Applications: Majority of stationary industrial online oxygen monitoring equipment.
There is no inherent superiority or inferiority between the lead and lead-free oxygen sensors. They simply cater to different needs. The lead one excels in low cost and ease of development, making it suitable for basic equipment; the lead-free one emphasizes long-term stability and environmental compliance, ideal for projects requiring long-term operation and exporting.
Sangbay sensor’s products comprehensively cover a wide application scenarios, including the retrofitting of legacy equipment, the development of new instruments, portable terminals, and complex outdoor monitoring and so on.
